Club benefit turned business
I began my making journey during my undergrad at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Upon information from a friend in the Quiz Bowl club, I joined RED Teams at UNL College of Engineering. This research club mainly participates in NASA student challenges such as MicroG NExT, but it’s primary purpose is to promote students in developing their hands-on project skills and attaining long term research/development experience. I joined the EV Team, and despite that group lasting only that year, I was able to learn skills and have access to UNL’s Innovation Studio workshop. Their staff and facilities are top notch in Nebraska and it’s the ideal place to learn and develop ones craft. I loved working on even the simple things I was making there and later became a teaching intern in the space, showing shop members how to use various equipment in the woodworking and 3D printing spaces. After graduating, I left Nebraska for an internship at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland Ohio doing VR/AR development. Although there was another Makerspace there(the Sears ThinkBox on Case Western’s Campus) it just didn’t make sense for me to do much there as I was limited on funding and time with my internship lasting only the Fall. Ever since returning to NE in Winter 2024, I have been working in Omaha, doing my work for this on the side, but I hope to expand this as and be able to focus on my woodworking full time!
